Everything you need to know about getting your Spanish NIE number
What exactly is an NIE and why do I need one?
The NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is Spain’s foreigner identification number. You need it for virtually every major legal or financial transaction: buying property, opening a bank account, registering as self-employed, signing contracts, purchasing a vehicle, and much more.
Can I apply for an NIE from outside Spain?
Yes. You can apply through your nearest Spanish consulate, or if you are from a visa-exempt country you can enter Spain and apply in person. We handle the entire process from within Spain on your behalf, with all three of our packages being fully remote.
How long does the process take?
This will depend on which package you choose. Our Basic plan will take a maximum of 15 to 20 working days to be completed. Priority is within 10 working days, and Urgent is 3 to 5 working days. Timelines begin once we receive your signed Power of Attorney and documents.
What documents do I need to provide?
We will tell you exactly what to provide after you start. Generally: a valid passport scan and the information we need for your power of attorney document. We prepare everything else including the EX-15 form, Tasa 790-012, and the legal justification letter.
Is the NIE the same as a residency permit?
No. The NIE is an identification number only. It does not grant the right to live or work in Spain. For long-term residency you will need a separate permit such as the Digital Nomad Visa or Non-Lucrative Visa. The NIE is often a prerequisite for those applications, depending on the application route in question.
Can I get an NIE urgently?
Yes, that is what the Urgent package is for. If you have an imminent property closing, vehicle purchase, or employment contract, we prioritise your case immediately. The Urgent package aims for 3 to 5 working days from receipt of your documents.
Are you affiliated with the Spanish government?
No. We are an independent legal service. All NIE applications are processed by Spain’s National Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We are licensed legal professionals who prepare, represent, and navigate the process on your behalf.
