Thinking about becoming a digital nomad in Dominica ? One of the first steps you’ll need to take is to obtain the Dominica Digital Nomad Visa.
In our How to Become a Digital Nomad in Dominica guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know to get started, including the eligibility criteria that’ll you need to satisfy, the supporting documentation that you’ll need to prepare, and the process you’ll need to follow in order to submit your application.
Dominica Digital Nomad Visa
The Dominica digital nomad visa, which is officially known as the Work In Nature (WIN) Visa, offers individuals and families the opportunity to live and work remotely in the Commonwealth of Dominica for a period of up to 18 months.
The WIN Visa not only allows professionals to maintain their employment while living abroad but also extends numerous additional benefits, such as income tax waivers and duty-free concessions.
Did you know?
The government of Dominica has made every effort to make the WIN Visa as appealing and convenient as possible. As a result, visa holders are able to travel freely during their stay, bring personal belongings (including vehicles) without paying import duty or VAT, and obtain an annual Dominican driver’s license.
For the purposes of the WIN Visa, family members are defined as a legally married spouse or long-term partner, children under 18 years of age (whether biological, stepchildren, or adopted), and any other relatives who are fully dependent on you due to age or physical and/or mental disabilities.
Note: Keep in mind that under the WIN Visa, you will only be permitted to work remotely for businesses or clients outside of Dominica, and cannot choose to provide any services to residents or engage in any activities that generate income within the island.
To get started, you’ll need to complete the following four steps:
- Meet the Eligibility Criteria
- Prepare the Necessary Documents
- Submit Your Visa Application
- Collect Your Digital Nomad Visa
In the sections below, we’ve explored each of these steps in greater detail.
Step 1: Ensure You Meet the Eligibility Criteria
Before getting started with the application process, you will need to first confirm that you’re actually eligible to obtain the Dominica digital nomad visa.
In accordance with guidelines set forth by the Commonwealth of Dominica, this will involve satisfying the following qualifying criteria:
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must have a clean criminal record and be of good moral character.
- You must be employed by or own a business that operates outside of Dominica and be able to perform your work remotely.
- You must expect to earn an annual income of at least USD $50,000 over the next 12 months or have sufficient funds to support yourself and any accompanying family members for the duration of your stay.
- You must have valid health insurance coverage for yourself and any accompanying family members for the entire duration of your stay in Dominica.
Note: By applying for the WIN Visa, you are attesting that you will continue to fulfill your tax obligations in your country of residence or tax domicile, as required by law, regardless of the income tax waiver granted for earnings generated outside of Dominica.
Step 2: Prepare the Necessary Documents
After confirming that you qualify for the Dominica digital nomad visa, you’ll need to begin preparing the necessary documentation for your visa application.
Due to the number of documents you’ll need to obtain — and the amount of formalities you’ll need to abide by — we always recommend starting this step at least 3 months prior to your planned move date.
In particular, you’ll be required to obtain all of the following:
- Valid Passport: You will need to submit the bio-data page of your passport, as well as those of any family members included in your application.
- Passport-Sized Photos: You will have to include two recent passport-sized photos for yourself and each family member over the age of 18.
- Police Record: You will need to submit a police clearance certificate for yourself and any family members over 18, showing a clean criminal record from every place you’ve lived in the past five years.
- Bank Reference Letter: You will be required to provide an official letter from your bank showing that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and any accompanying family members during your stay in Dominica, demonstrating that you meet the minimum threshold of USD $50,000 in annual income or equivalent savings.
- Employment Letter: You will have to include a letter confirming your current employment status. If your income is not from traditional employment, you will need to provide a recent bank statement, certificate of good standing, or a credit report as an alternative.
- Health Insurance: You will need to submit a copy of your health insurance policy or a certificate of coverage from your insurance provider. This document must clearly state that the policy covers medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation for yourself and all accompanying family members, and confirm that it is valid for the entire duration of your stay in Dominica.
- Passport-Sized Photos: You will have to include two recent passport-sized photos for yourself and each family member over the age of 18.
- Proof of Relationship: You will have to provide marriage, birth, or adoption certificates to verify the relationship for dependents, such as a spouse, children, or other family members accompanying you.
Keep in mind that in order to streamline this process, the Dominica government allows you to include your spouse, children, and any other eligible dependents in a single application, making it significantly easier for your family to join you.
Note: If any of your required documents are not originally in English, you will need to provide translated and certified copies as part of your application in order for them to be accepted.
Step 3: Submit Your Visa Application
After preparing all of the required documents outlined above and ensuring you meet the eligibility criteria, you’ll finally be ready to begin the process of submitting your visa application.
The application must be submitted online through the official Work In Nature (WIN) Visa portal, where you will fill out the necessary forms, upload your supporting documents, and pay a non-refundable application fee of $100 USD.
Once submitted, you will receive a confirmation email along with a unique application ID number, which you can use to track the status of your application.
Make sure to double-check all information and documents for accuracy before submission to avoid delays in processing.
After you submit your application, and only if it is approved, you will be required to pay the actual visa issuance fee, which is $800 USD for single applicants and $1,200 USD for families, regardless of the number of dependents in question.
Step 4: Collect Your Digital Nomad Visa
And that’s it! After gathering all the required documentation and submitting your application, all that’s left is to wait while it progresses through the official review process.
Your application will first be reviewed by a WIN Tourism Technical Officer, who will verify that all submitted documents are both complete and meet the necessary standards discussed above. If anything is missing or is unclear, they will reach out to you for clarification.
After passing this preliminary check, your application will be forwarded to the Joint Regional Communications Centre (JRCC), which will conduct a thorough due diligence check to verify your background and ensure compliance with Dominica’s visa standards.
Once the due diligence check is complete, your file will be sent to the National Security and Home Affairs Department, after which the Minister for National Security and Home Affairs will conduct a final evaluation to approve or deny your visa application.
If your application is successful, you will receive an official approval letter from the Permanent Secretary or the Ministry of Tourism, along with detailed instructions on how to pay the final WIN Visa issuance fee — this must be done within 30 days of receiving your approval letter to secure your visa.
Note: After making the payment, your visa will be ready for collection when you arrive in Dominica and will only be activated upon entry. You’ll have up to three months to enter Dominica after payment, and once activated, the visa will be valid for 18 months.
Dominica vs Other Destinations
When comparing Dominica to other digital nomad destinations, it’s clear that, unlike many Caribbean islands that focus primarily on tourism and resort culture, Dominica offers a true escape into nature, earning its well-deserved title as the “Nature Isle of the Caribbean.”
It offers a longer stay than most other digital nomad initiatives, and the island’s abundance of rainforests, waterfalls, and hiking trails makes it perfect for those seeking outdoor adventure alongside their professional commitments.
What truly sets Dominica apart, beyond its reputation for having some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean, is its unique, less commercialized way of life.
While almost every popular digital nomad hub around the world offers beautiful beaches and developed amenities, Dominica goes beyond with its untouched rainforests, volcanic spas, and year-round whale watching, offering experiences that are truly hard to find elsewhere.
This rich biodiversity is exactly why Dominica may be perfect for you if you’re seeking a destination that combines immersive natural experiences with a more authentic and off-the-beaten-path lifestyle, far from the typical tourist hotspots.
